The Definition of a Trader
A trader is an individual who engages in the buying and selling of assets in any financial market, either for themself or on behalf of another person or institution. The main difference between a trader and an investor is the duration for which the person holds the asset. Investors tend to have a longer-term time horizon, while traders tend to hold assets for much shorter periods to capitalize on short-term trends.
Key Takeaways
Traders are individuals who engage in the short-term buying and selling of a financial asset for themselves or an institution such as a bank, brokerage firm, or hedge fund.Traders use a variety of strategies to generate profits, including scalping, day trading, and swing trading.Traders can be contrasted with investors, who seek long-term capital gains rather than short-term profits.
The Role of a Trader
The main objective of a trader is to generate profits by buying at a low price and selling at a higher price. What they buy and sell are financial assets that include stocks, bonds, currencies, commodities, and derivatives. The profit generation is achieved through various approaches such as fundamental, technical and quantitative analyses, which aid in identifying market trends and opportunities.
Traders also manage risks associated with their profession, including market risk, credit risk, and liquidity risk. They may use hedging strategies to mitigate these risks.
Traders play a critical role in providing liquidity to financial markets. Their activities are essential for the smooth functioning of financial markets and the allocation of capital to productive uses.
Skill Requirements of Traders
Traders need to possess several quantitative and qualitative skills to be successful. The skills are a combination of technical, analytical, and behavioral qualities. It is a prerequisite for traders to be experts of the financial markets.
Traders need to have a deep understanding of the asset classes, market dynamics, and various strategies in these markets. Traders have to be analytical. They need to figure out how to process large amounts of data quickly and correctly to make informed decisions about the financial markets in which they trade. Numeracy skills are also important. Traders have to be able to calculate complex financial problems.
Traders also need to be masters of risk management. They must constantly monitor their current and potential positions to ensure that the risks they take are optimal. Traders must effectively use their stop-loss and limit orders to maintain profitability and margins.
Communication is also a key skill for a trader. Their colleagues, clients, bosses, and other stakeholders need to quickly and effectively understand what their trader is saying so that they can make informed decisions. Finally, traders should have high emotional intelligence. Trading is an intense profession, and traders need to effectively manage their emotions in a highly stressful environment.
Trading Strategies
Traders employ many strategies to produce and maintain profitability. Some of these strategies include scalping, day trading, swing trading, event trading, and position trading. It should be noted that no trading strategy is foolproof; there are advantages and disadvantages to any trading strategy. Traders also consider risks when employing their strategies.
Scalping
Scalping entails the buying and selling of financial instruments such as stocks, futures, currencies, and commodities in quick succession, with the goal of producing small gains on the positions. Scalpers attempt to profit from short-term price movements. The time frame that scalp traders hold positions ranges from seconds to minutes. The risk in scalping lies in the quick generation of successive losses rather than gains.
Day Trading
The strategy of day trading involves taking positions in financial assets such as stocks, futures, currencies, and commodities within the same trading day. Day traders tend to hold an abundance of trades over minutes and hours, as they maneuver their transactions through changing market conditions. They tend to amplify their trades through leveraged positions. The use of leverage poses an additional risk for day traders.
Swing Trading
Swing trading involves profiting from short- to medium-term price movements in various financial instruments such as stocks, futures, currencies, or commodities. Unlike scalpers and day traders, swing traders hold their positions for longer time periods. This can be for several days, weeks, or even months and is dependent on the asset, the trend, and the other existing positions of the swing trader.
Generally, swing trading is considered to be less risky than scalping or day trading because swing traders have more time to make decisions. Nonetheless, there are risks involved. News or events can affect the price trends of the swing trader’s portfolio.
Event Trading
The strategy of event trading entails profiting from short-term price movements triggered from a specific economic or financial event such as mergers or acquisitions, earnings releases, regulatory decisions, inflation data, labor market data, or gross domestic product (GDP) data.
Event traders need to execute their positions quickly, seconds before the data release, to profit from the position. Also, event traders tend to use leverage to amplify their profits. The use of leverage comes with additional risks to the strategy.
Position Trading
A position trader or a position trading firm is an individual or entity that buys financial assets for the long term. These professionals hold positions for weeks, months, or even years. The time frame of holding the position is highly dependent on the position trader’s investment thesis as well as the economic and financial market outlook.
With the longer-term view, position trading is considered to be less risky than the other short-term trading strategies, as these traders have more time to endure the short-term price fluctuations.
Places Where Traders Perform Their Duties
Traders tend to work in a variety of places. Those traders who work for themselves may have a home office or may rent one. If that isn’t the case, traders will have roles in investment banks, brokerage firms, proprietary trading firms, asset management firms, hedge funds, or exchanges. Traders may work in the physical office or remotely, depending on the nature of the trading activity and the firm’s policies.
Trader Operations: Institution vs. Own Account
Many large financial institutions have trading rooms where traders are employees who buy and sell a wide range of products on behalf of the company. Each trader is given a limit as to how large of a position they can take, the position’s maximum maturity, and how much of a mark-to-market loss they can have before a position must be closed out. The company has the underlying risk and keeps most of the profit; the trader receives a salary and bonuses.
On the other hand. most people who trade on their own account work from home or in a small office, and they often use a discount broker and electronic trading platforms. Their limits are dependent on their own cash and credit, but they will often keep all profits.
Discount Brokers: An Important Resource for Traders
Discount brokerage firms charge significantly lower commissions per transaction but provide little or no financial advice. Individuals can’t trade directly on a stock or commodity exchange on their own account, so using a discount broker is a cost-effective way to gain access to the markets.
Many discount brokers offer margin accounts, which let traders borrow money from the broker to buy assets. This increases the size of the positions they can take but also increases the potential loss.
Foreign exchange trading platforms match currency buyers and sellers in the spot, forward, and options markets. They sharply increase the amount of price information available to individual traders, thus narrowing price spreads and reducing commissions.
The Type of Information That Traders Use
Traders use a variety of techniques to source information. This is essential to make informed decisions and be profitable in their activities. The types of information that traders access include fundamental, technical, or market timing, noise, and sentiment. With this information, traders can even develop a contrarian view or find arbitrage opportunities.
Fundamental Information
Fundamental information, or fundamentals, refers to data that provide insights into the underlying intrinsic value of the financial asset, such as a stock, bond, future, currency, or commodity.
Fundamentals are generally gleaned from economic, industry-specific, and financial data and include economic data, industry trends, company news and events, and financial statements.
Technical and Market-Timing Information
When using technical and market-timing information, traders analyze past and current market data to spot patterns and trends. This is to anticipate future price movements in assets such as stocks, bonds, futures, currencies, or commodities.
Traders use technical analysis and other market-timing information to identify buying and selling opportunities. They use charting techniques and momentum indicators such as moving averages and oscillators to accomplish this. Examples of market-timing information include economic and financial releases, as well as market sentiment indicators.
Noise Trading
Noise trading involves making decisions on factors that seem to be helpful but would usually generate profits equivalent to a random choice. Some of these factors can include rumors, gossip, or emotions. Noise can create market imbalances that rational traders can profit from. Also, noise traders are often associated with retail or inexperienced investors who lack the necessary tools to profit from trading.
Sentiment
Sentiment refers to the overall view of financial market participants. This can be bullish, neutral, or bearish. These views can be toward the financial markets or various assets such as stocks, currencies, or commodities. Market sentiment can be attributed to factors such as economic and financial data, geopolitical events, or company news.
Sentiment indicators are based on data comprising trading volume, price movements, and news coverage of financial instruments or markets. Sentiment is also developed through the quantification of surveys or polls. The data helps to gauge the level of optimism or pessimism in the financial markets.
Contrarian Trading
Contrarian trading involves analyzing market conditions and taking an opposing side of the prevailing consensus view of the financial markets. This is based on the premise that market participants often overreact to events, leading to significant price movements in financial markets.
Contrarian traders identify overbought or oversold conditions in conjunction with trend reversals. High conviction in the trades are required, as the contrarian view by its very definition is often unpopular.
Successful contrarian traders employ a rigorous analytical process to identify potential opportunities and carefully manage risks to avoid significant losses.
Arbitrage
Arbitrage refers to exploiting price discrepancies between two or more instruments or markets. The assumption calls for taking advantage of mispricing in different markets, buying an asset in one market at a lower price and selling the same asset in another market at a higher price, producing a profit.
These opportunities can occur in stocks, bonds, currencies, and commodities over different exchanges or geographical regions. Arbitrage occurs because of market inefficiencies or temporary imbalances in supply and demand.
Becoming a Trader
Earning a role as a trader in the financial markets can involve a significant amount of preparation, including education, training, and licensing. Most entry-level trading jobs require at least a bachelor's degree, with employers often seeking graduates who have majored in business, economics, and accounting. A master's in business administration (MBA) may be an important qualification for higher-level positions at trading firms.
Companies that hire traders generally offer employee training programs that focus on the business and the particular types of assets sold by the firm. Brokers and investment bankers working with registered firms must obtain a license from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), which involves passing a series of examinations to verify their knowledge of the financial markets. Additional professional certifications such as the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and the Chartered Market Technician (CMT) designation may expand a trader's opportunities and chances for career advancement.
Salary and Employment Outlook
Many people may be interested in working as a trader because of the possibility of earning a substantial paycheck. For traders working on their own behalf, generating income will depend on implementing a successful trading strategy and effectively managing risk. Meanwhile, traders working for financial firms may earn a base salary with the potential for a substantial bonus based on their performance.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), as of May 2021, the median annual wage came to $62,910 for securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents—a broader category that includes many traders. Those working specifically in securities, commodity contracts, and other financial investments and related activities earn a median annual wage of $98,030.
If that level of income seems attractive, there is good news about the employment outlook for the industry, as predictions call for a healthy availability of jobs over the coming years. The BLS estimates that employment for securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents will grow 10% from 2021 to 2031, exceeding the average for all occupations. While competition for these positions may be intense given the necessary skills involved, the BLS estimates that 46,600 job openings per year in this area over the decade.
Why is trading important in finance?
There are several reasons why trading is important in finance. Trading in financial instruments produces price discovery, generates liquidity, brings out capital flows, and aids in price efficiency. Through trading, market participants converge toward the fair value of financial assets. Also, with trading, liquidity is generated, enabling the quick transfer of stocks, bonds, futures, commodities, and currencies.
What is the difference between trading and investing?
There are two major approaches to the financial markets: trading and investing. While they share some similarities, trading and investing differ in terms of time horizon, risk tolerance, and investment style, as well as approach. Trading is short-term in nature, while investing is long-term in nature. With investing, a more passive approach is taken. Investors will adjust their portfolios occasionally to reflect their long-term goals. Trading is much more active, with the frequent buying and selling of securities.
What are the asset types for traders?
Stocks, bonds, currencies or foreign exchange, options, futures, commodities, cryptocurrencies, and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are the most common type of assets that are traded. The asset class is dependent on the traders’ preference, expertise, and the market in which they operate. Also, traders can choose to specialize in one asset class or more, depending on their goals and skills.
What are the benefits of being a trader?
There are several potential benefits of being a trader. Traders have a high propensity to generate earnings. Traders tend to work in a fast-paced and exciting environment. This would appeal to people who like being in a highly dynamic space. Traders can have the flexibility to work remotely and work nonstandard hours. Traders gain significant exposure to the financial markets, as they have to actively and closely monitor them along with the factors that drive the respective markets.
What are the limitations of being a trader?
In any role, there are advantages and disadvantages. For traders, there are a handful of limitations. Trading can be a high-stress and competitive profession, which isn’t suitable for everyone. There is also a risk of financial loss. Moreover, traders work long hours. When markets are in a downturn, there is a high potential for traders to lose their jobs. To be a successful trader, people often need to attain specialized education, training, and experience, which can be time-consuming and expensive.
The Bottom Line
Trading is a highly skilled profession that provides price discovery and liquidity in a multitude of financial markets, including stocks, bonds, currencies, commodities, or derivatives. Traders can either be entrepreneurs or work for investment banks, hedge funds, or proprietary trading firms. Also, they use various strategies and tools to look for opportunities as well as to exploit market inefficiencies or mispricing.
To gain an edge, traders analyze market data and news, as well as economic and financial indicators. Also, traders may use technical analysis, quantitative models, or algorithms to execute their orders. Traders need to have strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills. Beyond that, they need to be able to manage risks and work under pressure. Successful traders can make huge sums of money, but trading is also associated with sizable risk and potential losses.

负责账户现金量越大,收益越高很多交易员的工资比CEO还高,因为他们的收益直接与账户现金量交易利润挂钩♦ 交易员的日常有人赚钱就有人赔钱,虽然利润率高但是很辛苦♦ 职位分类Analyst(AN)[分析师]、Associate(AS)[经理]、Senior Associate(SA)[高级经理]、Vice President(VP)[副总裁]、Senior Vice President(SVP)[高级副总裁]、Director(总经理、董事、总监)[D]、Executive Director(执行总经理、执行董事、执行总监)[ED]、Managing Director(董事总经理)[MD]。

Several famous former traders have moved on to different careers, such as John Key (who served as the 38th Prime Minister of New Zealand) and Jimmy Wales (the founder of Wikipedia), but some traders are simply famous as traders. The lives of the world's most famous are colored by both triumph and tragedy with some exploits achieving mythological status within the industry.
This list is in order of their year of birth. It's not sorted by achievements or earnings.
Key Takeaways
Stock traders don't often become household names, but a select few have become renowned for their market prowess. Those who do rise to fame often do so with a combination of skill, luck, and determinization. Some of the most well-known traders and investors in American history include speculators, investors, and hedge fund managers. Each of them has traded with a different style, from fundamentals to technical analysis.
1. Jesse Livermore
Jesse Lauriston Livermore (1877–1940) was an American trader famous for both colossal gains and losses in the market. He successfully shorted the 1929 market crash, building his fortune to $100 million. But he lost his money by 1934 and tragically took his own life in 1940.
Livermore rebounded from several bankruptcies in the process of building his wealth. He survived the first two, but the third destroyed him. This, combined with family tragedies and stress, ultimately proved to be too much for him.
2. William Delbert Gann
WD Gann (1878–1955) was a trader who used market forecasting methods based on geometry, astrology, and ancient mathematics. His mysterious technical tools included Gann angles, Gann fans, and the Square of 9. Gann wrote several books and taught courses in addition to trading. It's said that his favorite book and learning tool was the Bible.
It's a matter of dispute whether Gann's wealth was sourced from trading or derived from his investment courses and books. His estate was valued at a little over $100,000 at the time of his death. That may not sound like much, but in 1955, it had the purchasing power of about $1 million today.
3. George Soros
The name George Soros is notorious in trading, and Soros remains among the most active and wealthiest traders as of 2023. He's said to have amassed approximately $6.7 billion. He's also a Holocaust survivor and a philanthropist.
Hungarian-born in 1930, Soros is the chair of Soros Fund Management, one of the most successful firms in the history of the hedge fund industry. He earned the moniker "the man who broke the Bank of England" in 1992 after his short sale of $10 billion worth of pounds, yielding a tidy $1 billion profit.
4. Jim Rogers
James Rogers, Jr. (born 1942) is the chair of Rogers Holdings. He co-founded the Quantum Fund with George Soros in the early 1970s—it gained a staggering 4,200% over ten years.
Rogers is renowned for his correct bullish call on commodities in the 1990s and his books detailing his adventurous world travels.
Rogers served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1966 through 1968. He worked on Wall Street before his service and joined an investment bank upon his return. It was during this time that he met Soros; the rest is the stuff trading history is made of.
5. Richard Dennis
Richard J. Dennis (born 1949) was known as the "Prince of the Pit." He made his mark in the trading world as a highly successful Chicago-based commodities trader. He reportedly acquired a $200 million fortune over ten years from his speculating, but what's notable is that he is rumored to have started with just $1,600.
Dennis was the co-creator of the mythical Turtle Trading experiment along with partner William Eckhardt. He suffered major losses in the 1987 stock market crash and again in 2000.
6. Paul Tudor Jones
Paul Tudor Jones II (born 1954) is said to have earned about $7.5 billion (as of 2023) and remains active. The founder of Tudor Investment Corporation, one of the world's leading hedge funds, he gained notoriety after making around $100 million from shorting stocks during the 1987 market crash after predicting it in a television documentary.
He wrote newspaper articles in college under the byline "Eagle Jones." He began his investment career by trading cotton.
7. John Paulson
John Paulson (born 1955), of the hedge fund Paulson & Co., rose to the top of the financial world after making billions of dollars in 2007 by using credit default swaps to effectively sell short the U.S. subprime mortgage lending market.
It's said that his $4.4 billion fortune was largely earned by building the wealth of others, but he lost a significant amount of his own money by 2020 due to some missteps taken on pharmaceutical, healthcare, and gold stocks. Numerous investors left his hedge fund as a result.
8. Steven Cohen
Steven Cohen (born 1956) founded SAC Capital Advisors, a leading hedge fund focused primarily on trading equities. SAC was charged by the Securities and Exchange Commission with failing to prevent insider trading in 2013 and later agreed to pay a $1.2 billion fine.
Cohen started out by investing money he had earned while playing cards in college. It's said that he earned $8,000 on his first day at the investment banking firm Gruntal in 1978 before moving on to found SAC. He's the founder and CEO of Point72 Asset Management in Stamford, Connecticut.
9. David Tepper
David Tepper (born 1957) is the founder of the wildly successful hedge fund Appaloosa Management. Tepper is a specialist in distressed debt investing and has made several appearances on CNBC, where his statements were closely watched by traders.
He began his career as a credit analyst. He became famous for tagging distressed companies, rolling up his shirtsleeves, and guiding them into profitability. Later, he turned to purchasing bank bonds.
Tepper is also a devoted philanthropist.
10. Nick Leeson
Nicholas Leeson (born 1967) is the rogue trader who famously caused the collapse of the UK-based Barings Bank. Leeson served four years in a Singapore jail but later bounced back to become CEO of the Irish football club Galway United.
Leeson's success is notable because he didn't pursue further education after high school. He started out working at a pencil-pushing job at a local bank. He then moved on to Morgan Stanley and finally to Barings Bank. Barings ultimately lost about $1.4 billion. Leeson is said to have left a note when departing from the bank that simply said, "I'm sorry."
Who Is the Richest Day Trader in the World?
We may never know who the most successful day trader is or was because many prefer to remain anonymous. But according to Money, Inc., the title of "richest day trader in the world" could be bestowed upon Bill Lipschutz, a bond trader at Salomon Bros. in the 1980s and 1990s.
Who Is the Greatest Investor of All Time?
Investors buy and hold for longer-term growth rather than trade in and out every day. Warren Buffett is often cited as the most successful investor of all time through his holding company, Berkshire Hathaway.
What Is a Swing Trader?
Swing traders generally trade within ranges, buying at support levels and selling at resistance levels, with typical holding periods of several days to weeks.
The Bottom Line
The dramatic and varied life stories of the world's most famous traders have been compelling material for several books and movies. Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, a fictionalized portrayal of Jesse Livermore's life, is widely viewed as a timeless classic and one of the most important books ever written about trading. Rogue Trader (1999), starring Ewan McGregor, is based on the story of Nick Leeson and the collapse of Barings Bank.

If you're having trouble deciding between a career as a Wall Street trader or stockbroker, you'll want to fully understand the pros and cos of each. Both professions involve buying and selling securities, but they have some differences to consider. In this article, we'll look at how the job of a Wall Street trader compares to a stockbroker, so you can decide which is best for you.
Traders generally work for larger firms and buy and sell securities on behalf of those firms.Unlike traders, brokers can also serve as sales agents on their own behalf.Brokers must manage a slate of regular individual customers and they have direct contact with clients.
What Do Brokers and Traders Do?
While both brokers and traders deal in securities, brokers are also sales agents, who act either on their own behalf or for a securities or brokerage firm. They are responsible for obtaining and maintaining a roster of regular individual customers, also known as retail customers and/or institutional customers.
Traders, on the other hand, tend to work for a large investment management firm, an exchange or a bank, and they buy and sell securities on behalf of the assets managed by that firm.
Buying and Selling
Brokers have direct contact with clients. They buy and sell securities based on those clients' wishes. Some may even act as financial planners for their clients, shaping a retirement plan, dealing with portfolio diversification, and advising on insurance or real estate investments if their firm offers such financial and wealth management services.
Note
Brokers deal with equities and bonds, as well as mutual funds, ETFs, and other retail products. They also deal with options for more sophisticated clients.
A broker often spends a great deal of time keeping clients informed of variations in stock prices. Additionally, brokers spend a fair portion of their days looking to expand their client bases. They do this by cold calling potential customers and showcasing their background and abilities, or holding public seminars on various investment topics.
Traders, on the other hand, tend to buy or sell securities based on the wishes of a portfolio manager at an investment firm. A trader may be assigned certain accounts and charged with creating an investment strategy that best suits that client. Traders work in different markets like stocks, debt, derivatives, commodities, and forex among others. They may specialize in one type of investment or asset class.
Research
Both brokers and traders review analyst research to make recommendations to clients or portfolio managers to buy or sell securities. However, traders often conduct their own research and analysis, as well.
Most traders now spend their time on the phone or in front of computer screens analyzing performance charts and polishing their trading strategies, not on a busy trading floor as they once did.
Both brokers and traders are professions that typically require high energy levels, an ability to multitask. You must be able to cope with a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, especially during market hours of 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
Becoming a Trader or Broker
The path to becoming a trader or a broker is generally the same in terms of the background and education. Let's look more specifically at what's involved.
Education
A bachelor's degree is a basic requirement if you want to work for a reputable financial institution or company. Most traders or brokers have degrees in math like accounting, finance, banking, economics or business.
Note
Liberal arts majors can potential have a successful career as traders, but a degree related to math and business increases your chances of getting hired.
Many brokers and traders then go on to get a master of business administration (MBA) degree or a master of science in finance. Trader or broker may often have other work experience prior to entering the field, like working in the finance department at a corporation.
Many financial firms offer internships—some paid, some not—and year-long training programs for recent graduates, especially for those on a track to get their trading license. An internship can increase your chances of getting hired to a permanent position.
Requirements: Exams and Licensing
Being a trader or a broker requires you to get a Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) license to execute orders. And to get a license, you need to take some of FINRA's tests.
To be a trader, you must pass the Securities Trader Representative Examination with a score of at least 70. This exam is colloquially known as the Series 57 exam. It covers trading activity and maintaining books and records, trade reporting, and clearance and settlement.
To be a broker, you must get 72% or higher on the General Securities Representative Examination — more commonly referred to as the Series 7 exam. This is a 225-minute, 125-question exam, testing the basics of investing and investment products as well as the rules and regulations of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Many traders take this exam, too.
In addition to the Series 7 and 57, many states require a candidate to pass the Uniform Securities Agent State Law Examination, commonly referred to as the Series 63 exam. The Series 63 exam also tests various aspects of the stock market. When an individual has a license from FINRA, they have the ability to buy or sell stocks and other securities.
Changes to series tests
There have been some changes for the series tests as of October 2020. A single Securities Industry Essentials Exam (SIE) replaced overlapping portions of the 7, the 57 and other series exams. Candidates will then take an additional, smaller "top-off" exam related to the specific field they hope to enter.
The reforms will also make the exam-taking process more democratic. Currently, you need to be employed or "sponsored" by a FINRA-registered company to take one of the tests.
Sponsoring is often a part of financial firms' training programs, with hiring conditional on a candidate qualifying for the license—similar to the way law firms engage graduates who study for the bar exam. The SIE removes this requirement, though you still have to be associated with a FINRA member firm to take the top-off exams.
Onto the Desk and the Floor
You have two years after passing an exam to register with FINRA to get your license. Before granting it, you will need a background check—both criminal and financial—a fingerprint card and you will need to register with the SEC.
After passing the exam(s) and attaining a license, you can request to be moved to any vacant trading desk. Here, you'll learn how to develop trading strategies, direct trade executions and carry out trades on behalf of the investment bank or clients of the firm.
Traders often deal with sensitive financial matters like government securities, so you must be screened by the FBI before starting assignments.
At the trading desk, you can study companies and understand market movements. You can gradually identify a niche for yourself, such as in futures contracts, equities, or debt instruments.
Career Direction
There are a variety of different career paths you can take with some experience. Here are some options:
Financial advisor: Advisors give financial advice to their clients and recommend financial investments and instruments to them so they can achieve their goals.Financial analyst: They analyze and study trends and data as they provide advisory services to others, mainly organizations.Investment banker: These bankers act as intermediaries between businesses and investors. Businesses raise capital by selling securities, while investors buy securities to make a profit. Investment bankers provide advisory services to businesses and help them raise the capital they need.
How Much Do Brokers and Traders Make?
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median annual salary for securities, commodities and financial sales agents was $67,480 for 2022. The BLS does not separate traders and brokers but rather generalizes the category as noted above. The outlook for the industry is positive—job growth between 2022 and 2032 is expected to be roughly 7% as demand for financial services, investment banking, and retirement planning grows.
What Is the SIE Exam For?
FINRA's Securities Industries Essentials (SIE) exam will test your basic knowledge of the securities industry, focusing on products and terminology. It will also test your understanding of regulations and prohibited practices. To prepare, you can enroll in a reputable prep course.
What Disqualifies You on a FINRA Background Check?
Your background check can determine whether FINRA approves you to trade securities. Several factors in your background can disqualify you, including felony or misdemeanor charges, injunctions, or bars.
The Bottom Line
People want to become brokers or traders for various reasons. Money is a primary driver, but passion and interest in finance and the movements of investment funds are key, too. If you like dealing with people, you might prefer a broker's life. Whichever profession you choose, be prepared to work in a fast-paced workplace.
